The Brazilians will play each other in the semifinal on Sunday, at 10:00 local time (08:00 UTC), with the Germans and Americans meeting in the second duel of the round one hour later. The losers will play for bronze at 15:30 local time (13:30 UTC), while the winners will clash in the gold medal match at 18:00 local time (16:00 UTC).

Duda and Ana Patrícia, who went undefeated in their pool in Hamburg with just one set lost, started the elimination rounds in the quarterfinals and displayed a strong performance against reigning European champions Nina Brunner and Tanja Hüberli of Switzerland, advancing to the semifinals with an emphatic two-set (21-15, 21-13) victory.

“It was a great match against the Swiss,” Ana Patrícia reflected. “They’re a very strong team and were really difficult opponents. Our matches against them are always complicated and it was the exact same this time, but fortunately, we managed to get into a good rhythm and secure this victory, which is so important to us.”

With their triumph in the quarterfinals, the Brazilians return to the semifinals on the Beach Pro Tour after missing it out last month, in Montréal, when they finished fifth. Before the Canadian event, the world champions had made four-straight podium appearances at Elite16 events, winning two golds, one silver and one bronze.

Carol/Barbara (BRA) vs. Hughes/Cheng (USA) - Quarterfinals #6512151

Carol and Bárbara navigated two difficult matches to make it to the semifinals

In the semifinals, Duda and Ana Patrícia will play compatriots Carol and Bárbara, the only team to steal a set from them so far in Hamburg, during pool play. The veterans had a longer day than their opponents on Saturday, having to go through the Round of 12, where they overcame China’s Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia in the tie-breaker (19-21, 21-14, 15-12), and the quarterfinals, where they eliminated Americans Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes in straight sets (21-17, 21-15).

“There were some Brazilians fans on the stands supporting us today and their presence was really important to us,” Bárbara commented. “We feel that we play at our best when we can put all our energy on the court and play aggressively and their support helped us do that.”

Müller/Tillmann (GER) vs. Melissa/Brandie (CAN) - Quarterfinals #6511562

Müller and Tillmann counted on the support of their home fans to beat Melissa and Brandie

The only German team left in the event, Tillmann and Müller had a similar path to the semifinals, their second in the season. The Europeans dominated French Lézana Placette and Alexia Richard to a two-set (21-19, 21-15) victory in the Round of 12 and got another sweep (22-20, 21-10) in the quarterfinals, sending Canadian Olympians Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson home.

The winners of the fourth and last spot in the semifinals, Kloth and Nuss came from behind to defeat German qualifiers Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann in the tie-breaker (13-21, 21-15, 15-11) at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium in their only match of the day. The two will be looking for their fourth medal in the season on Sunday after taking gold in La Paz and Uberlândia and bronze in Gstaad.

“We’re doing a good job of keeping the trust in ourselves even though the first set hasn’t been good in most of our matches,” Kloth remarked. “But we haven’t let that get us down, we just look at each other and start from zero on the second set. Tillmann and Müller will be our third German opponents this week and the crowd is going to be against us. We’ll just look at each other and know that it’s going to be us against the world, but that’s all we need. It’s going to be a fun environment.”
