The best beach volleyball teams in the planed gathered in Mexico for ten days, from October 6-15, to compete in the highlight of the 2023 international season, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.

There was a lot at stake at the 14th edition of the tournament, with 1 million US dollars in prize money and one Olympic spot in each gender in play for the winners of the event, making of it the most-anticipated of the entire season.

It was another greatly successful edition of beach volleyball's flagship event and also a historic one as several milestones were achieved in Tlaxcala, Huamantla and Apizaco.

Mexico became the 11th different country to host the World Championships and the first from Latin America to do it in 20 years - the country was also the third to have matches in multiple cities. This year's edition of the event featured 48 teams in each gender, who represented 40 countries and all five continents.

Spanish legend Pablo Herrera set a new record for most World Championship appearances this year. The 41-year-old veteran became the first player to compete for the world title in 11 different editions of the event, having participated in each one held since 2003, when he made his debut at the event.

With 2022 winners Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway falling in the quarterfinals, there still hasn't been a men's team capable of winning back-to-back editions of the World Championship.

With their victory in the gold medal match against Brazil's Eduarda 'Duda' Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos, USA's Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes took the United States back to the top of the podium for the first time since 2009 and became the third American women's duo to triumph in the event.

Two of the six teams that made it to the podium in Tlaxcala were formed by players who were making their first World Championship appearances - men's silver medalists David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden and women's bronze medalists Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss of the United States.

The men's gold medal match, between Czechia's Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner and Sweden's David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig, was a repeat of the final of the 2022 European Championships, in Munich, which was won by the Swedish. This time, the Czechs came out on top, winning in the tie-breaker.

The men's podium, which had Czechia's Perusic/Schweiner, Sweden's Åhman/Hellvig and Poland's Michal Bryl/Bartosz Losiak, was just the second with duos from the same continent since the start of the event and granted each of the three nations their first medals at the World Championship among the men.

In 2025, the Beach Volleyball World Championships will explore another location for the first time, with the Australian city of Adelaide welcoming the top pairs on the planet.
